Description
Are you looking for a daily reading warm-up that aligns with the science of reading? Do you need an activity that provides consistent practice and deepens reading comprehension, yet requires no prep on your part? If so, then Paragraph of the Week is for you!
Paragraph of the Week is a resource designed to reinforce essential reading skills through short (5-10 minutes), focused activities rooted in the science of reading. For each month of the year (including summer), you’ll get a set of four paragraphs—2 fiction and 2 nonfiction. Each paragraph comes with 5 quick activities—one for every day of the week. While the activities are sorted by month, you can teach them in any order you choose! No particular sequence is necessary.
Each week, students will read a paragraph and:
Day 1: Activate Schema
(KWL charts, anticipation guides, brainstorming and more!)
Day 2: Investigate Vocabulary
(use context clues, study morphology, etc.)
Day 3: Break Down Sentences
(explore complex sentence structures, figurative language, etc.)
Day 4: Analyze Text Structure
(determine story parts, identify nonfiction text structures, etc.)
Day 5: Make an Inference
(predict based on evidence, infer motives, etc.)
To guide students along, each set comes with a Teacher Guide–these pages provide the answers to each activity as well as talking points, discussion ideas, and tips for how to walk your students through the skill. Even if your students are unfamiliar with a particular skill, they can complete the activity through guidance!
This resource works great for:
-Whole group reading warm-up
-Small group warm-up for targeted practice
-Daily homework review
Better yet, this is a print-and-go resource, meaning that you have everything you need included in the download! We have even included a “How to Use” guide to help you determine the way the resource will best fit your classroom.
