Description
Learning about Social Studies? Reading about social studies doesn’t mean we throw away all of the reading skills and strategies we know. It means we use them even more! So why not teach social studies WHILE practicing reading?
A principal of mine once told me, ‘Science and social studies are just fancy reading.’ And it’s true! But sometimes we forget that when teaching these subjects we can use the reading skills students are learning to help them break down and understand the core content.
That’s where Social Studies Smash-Ups come in! I’ve created a fully loaded unit that combines both reading skills but also social studies standards!
These units can be used in reading class as focused nonfiction units.
or
They can be used in social studies classes with the helpful support of reading skills that allow students to comprehend the material.
The units include:
- Teacher guide
- I can statements
- 15-page print & fold nonfiction student reader
- Teacher copy of the student reader – prompting guide
- Daily lesson plans
- Student workbook – print and go
- 6 Vocabulary posters
- Daily vocabulary practice activities
- 2 hands-on collaborative, critical thinking activities
- 12 Differentiated close reading passages
- Assessments
- Review game
The student reader focuses on the social studies topic of:
- Immigration
- Community
- Economics (coming end of May)
- Government (coming end of June)
- US Landmarks (coming end of June)
- Geography (coming end of June)
Inside the reader, you’ll find a table of contents, index, and glossary as well as 4 headings – breaking down the content into consumable pieces.
The student notebook then includes activities for each of the 4 headings in the reading, focusing on core reading skills that will help students review reading while comprehending the social studies information! The notebook also includes all journal pages, student reflection pages, vocabulary activities, and exit tickets.
Continue the learning through daily vocabulary activities (inside the student workbook), hands-on collaborative activities, differentiated close reading passages that are perfect for small groups or warm-ups, and more!
